The comparative biology of pulmonary intravascular macrophages.

چکیده
Pulmonary intravascular macrophages are an important part of the mononuclear phagocyte system in some species of mammals, mainly sheep and other ruminants, pigs, and horses. These cells phagocytize foreign particles, cell debris and pathogens that pass through the pulmonary circulation. Species with intravascular macrophages localize intravenously injected tracer particles and bacteria predominantly in the lung rather than the liver, and exhibit pulmonary hypertension when these cells are activated. Both in vivo and in vitro studies show that pulmonary intravascular macrophages have distinct secretory and immune capabilities. Consequently, the pulmonary intravascular macrophages play an important role in pulmonary inflammation in species that have them

Pulmonary intravascular macrophages and lung health: what are we missing?
Pulmonary intravascular macrophages (PIMs) are constitutively found in species such as cattle, horse, pig, sheep, goat, cats, and whales and can be induced in species such as rats, which normally lack them. It is believed that human lung lacks PIMs, but there are previous suggestions of their induction in patients suffering from liver dysfunction. Recent data show induction of PIMs in bile-duct...
متن کاملIntravascular macrophage depletion attenuates endotoxin lung injury in anesthetized sheep.
We recently showed that we can selectively and safely deplete most (average 85%) of the pulmonary intravascular macrophages in sheep by intravenously infusing liposomes containing dichloromethylene bisphosphonate. After a 1-h stable baseline, we made a 6-h comparison after a 30-min intravenous endotoxin infusion (1 microg/kg) between six anesthetized control lambs and six anesthetized lambs in ...
متن کاملCHROMOSOMAL PROTEINS IN PULMONARY ALVEOLAR MACROPHAGES
In this study the nature of chromosomal proteins, his tones and nonhistone in resident alveolar macrophages was investigated in comparison to peritoneal neutrophils and calf thymus proteins. Cells were obtained by lavaging the lung and after purity determination they were subjected to fractional extraction procedures. Proteins were then analysed on SDS polyacrylamide gels and densitometric...
متن کاملPRRS Virus-Induced Damage to Intravascular Macrophages
and Implications The results of this research suggest: (1) PRRSV has a detrimental effect on the uptake of copper particles by pulmonary intravascular macrophages (PIMs), (2) the severity of PRRSV-induced damage to PIMs differs among PRRSV isolates, and (3) PRRSV-induced decreased pulmonary clearance supports the hypothesis that PRRSV infection makes pigs more susceptible to bacterial septicemia.
متن کاملPulmonary intravascular macrophages: their contribution to the mononuclear phagocyte system in 13 species.
The organ uptake of intravenously injected particles was examined in 13 species. All animals were injected intravenously with 198Au colloid and magnetic iron oxide particles. Vascular clearance kinetics of198Au colloid was similar in all species. Pulmonary uptake of 198Au colloid ranged from 17 to 60% in sheep, calves, pigs, and cats but was <1.1% in monkeys, hyraxes, rabbits, guinea pigs, rats...
